Why Do People Say Hurtful Things Online?

Online, people say things they would never say in person.

Online, people say things they would never say in person.

Not because they are brave. Because the screen removes structure.

No eye contact. No pause. No visible consequence.

So whatever is already loose inside them comes out faster.

Sometimes it is frustration. Sometimes insecurity. Sometimes boredom dressed as opinion. And sometimes, yes, it is simply cruelty.

Not every hurtful comment is an accident.

Some people are not confused. They are deliberate.

That matters.

Because the common advice is too soft.

"Don't take it personally."

Nice idea. Incomplete.

The better rule is this:

Read it clearly before you carry it.

Some comments are projection.

They come from a bad day, private frustration, envy, or the need to throw discomfort somewhere else.

Some are performance. A cheap attempt to look sharp in public.

And some are direct attacks from people who enjoy damage because the internet makes damage easy.

The mistake is treating all of them the same.

You explain yourself. You defend your intent. You reply to noise as if it came in good faith.

Now the distraction has won.

And online, the system rewards that mistake.

More replies. More attention. More visibility for something that deserved none.

Read It For What It Is

Quiet Power does not confuse access with value.

Not every opinion deserves entry. Not every comment deserves a response. Not every person deserves your energy.

So the question is not: "How do I make them understand?"

It is: "What is this, really?"

If it is impulse, let it pass.

If it is bait, do not bite.

If it is malice, block it cleanly.

If there is something useful hidden inside it, take the lesson without swallowing the poison.

The Difference

That is the difference.

You do not need to absorb everything that reaches you. You only need to recognize it accurately.

Because most of the time, you are not the cause.

You are just the nearest surface.

Closing Standard

What people say online reveals their structure faster than yours.

The mistake is thinking every hit was meant as truth.

It was not. It was release.

You were just where it landed.
